Navigating through time
Navigation had been an enterprise fraught with danger from the earliest days of ocean sailing. Increased overseas trade and exploration in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries dramatically increased the number of men and ships lost on the rocks every year – or, conversely, death through starvation if sailors were further from land than they thought.
